Managing Your High Blood Pressure

BFHT-BloodPressure1

“Managing Your High Blood Pressure” Information Session
With every heart beat, the heart pumps blood through the arteries to the rest of the body. Blood pressure is the force of blood that is pushing up against the walls of the blood vessels. High blood pressure (or hypertension) is a chronic condition where the pressure in the arteries is too high. Over time, this can damage the walls of your blood vessels, increasing the risk of fatty plaque build up and if left uncontrolled, it can weaken the heart and increase your risk of stroke, kidney disease, blindness, heart disease, and aneurisms. But, there are things that you can do to help manage and lower your blood pressure.

What will I learn during this Information Session?
By controlling and properly treating high blood pressure, the risk of a stroke can be reduced by up to 40% and the risk of a heart attack can be reduced by 25%. This two hour session, taught by a Barrie and Community Family Health Team Nurse Practitioner and Registered Dietitian, will help you to understand the risks of high blood pressure and how to properly manage your readings. You will learn about treatments for high blood pressure and about lifestyle modifications, including the DASH diet, that can help to improve your blood pressure.
