Pulmonary Rehabilitation
The Barrie and Community Family Health Team’s (BCFHT) Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is a 7-week course with supervised exercise and education sessions to help people with chronic lung disease breathe easier and improve their quality of life.
What is the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program?
The BCFHT’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program combines education and exercise to help adults with chronic lung disease understand their breathing, manage their condition, and build strength and stamina.
Participants who complete the 7-week course (held twice a week), often experience reduced shortness of breath, improved energy and the ability to stay more active.
Educational Class Topics Include:
- Importance of Exercise
- Managing Stress and Anxiety
- Energy Conservation and Improving Quality of Life
- Managing Flare-ups
- Home Oxygen
- Community Resources
- Falls Prevention
- Nutrition and Medications
Exercise sessions may include
- Breathing Techniques
- Use of a Treadmill Stationary Bicycle
- Weight Training
- Stretching
- Balancing
The education and course materials will enable patients to continue practicing what they learn, at home.
How do I register?
Your Barrie and Community Family Health Team Physician or Nurse Practitioner may refer you to our Lung Health Program. A respirology referral and a confirmed diagnosis of lung disease are required prior to registration.
